VCUarts and the VMFA have been collaborating on the Emerging Artist + Innovators showcase for over a year now, and this year’s final three budding innovators all come from the Department of Communication Arts.
To wrap up their product innovation experience, Michaela Denise Lewis, Rachel Hume and Erin Petty will be selling their products at the showcase in the VMFA Shop on September 23 12-7 p.m. and September 24 12-4 p.m.
Learn more about these artists and the products they’ve created:
Michaela Denise Lewis created sticker & stationary kits based off of ‘Art History is Not Linear’ by Ryan McGinness. “I couldn’t be happier with how CrazyFace turned out because I believe it reflects and promotes the collaborative effort that went into it. Now anyone willing to be silly long enough to arrange stickers can express themselves and pass it on through a postcard! Be abstract, ridiculous or scary. Make a self-portrait. Make a soul self-portrait. Have fun!”
Rachel Hume created jewelry inspired by the ‘Kuosi Garment’ in the the VMFA’s permanent collection. “I was instantly drawn to [the Kuosi Garment] because of the repeating rhythmic patterns and shapes in the beadwork, something my own personal illustration and design work has in common. I was interning at Big Secret, a laser cutting studio, and wanted to make something using the new technology I was exposed to. I’m glad I kept my product fairly simple, from a design and aesthetic standpoint.”
Erin Petty created totes and pencil cases inspired by Richard Roth’s ‘Untitled (Yellow Corner)’ in the VMFA’s permanent collection. “This piece has always been one of my favorites in the Museum. Roth’s work is fun and full of color while also skillfully executed and flawlessly finished. I have tried to carry over these major principles into my Art Bags to create unique and useful totes and pencil cases.”
