Through Friday, July 7, Page Bond Gallery hosts “Emerge,” an exhibition of work by VCUarts students and recent graduates.

“Ambitious, bold, fearless,” says Page Bond, “these artists are driving something playful and smart.”

Mounted annually since 2011, the show is a fantastic opportunity for art lovers in Richmond to see the impressive skill our current and recent students have honed over the course of their careers. Bond considers “Emerge” a catalyst for conversations about art education and a way to strengthen the public’s knowledge about professional artists and VCUarts’ many programs. The show features the colorful Matisse-like oil paintings of Ryan Syrell (M.F.A. ’17), the kaleidoscopic acrylics of painting and printmaking major Jessica Cruz, and many other artists working in a wide variety of media.

“‘Emerge’ is an exhibition I look forward to every year,” says Bond, “because the work by VCU artists, at the beginning of their careers, quite simply is inventive, intelligent and inspiring. It allows both the gallery and the artists to talk to collectors and to experience having a wider audience see and react to their developing practices.”
