Funky Turns 40 is a traveling exhibition that was featured at the launch of the Black History Museum earlier this summer. The exhibition commemorates the 40th anniversaries of 1970’s Saturday morning cartoons that featured positive black characters for the first time in television history and includes 60 pieces of original animation cels and drawings.
The curators, Pamela Thomas and Loreen Williamson, will be on campus Tuesday, August 30 to discuss the exhibition and its themes. Christopher Lehman, Ph.D., the chair of Ethnic & Women’s Studies at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota and the author of The Colored Cartoon, will join the conversation and provide context on the history of animation.
