Photography & Film senior Alex Kreher (B.F.A. ’16) has been around the world during his academic career, documenting people and places wherever he goes.
Through his CoLab internship at VCUarts, he submitted a concept to Google’s “If I had Glass” competition, which led to him working with Google in their New York City office in spring 2013 on the Project Glass beta release.
Later that year, Kreher traveled to France where he documented Zoë Romano’s world recording setting run: she ran 2,000 miles in nine weeks along the Tour de France course. His documentary about the run, Street Dreams, won the “Best Student Multimedia” award at the prestigious New York Photo Awards.
“My favorite things in life are traveling, meeting people and listening to their stories and always trying to leave a smile on the people I interact with,” said Kreher. “Since we spend half of our lives at work, I needed to find a way to incorporate those things in my work.”
Which is exactly what he’s done through his production company, Ost Haus.
How do I balance school work and professional work? I don’t. It means very long nights in my basement, never losing the focus on the bigger picture – which sometimes means choosing priorities and having good relationships with my professors, letting them know what is going on in my life. – Alex Kreher (B.F.A. ’16)
After graduation, Kreher will be dedicated full time to his company, where he has one feature length documentary in post-production and in pre-production.
“I am just super excited to have all hours of the day to focus on doing what I love and I feel pretty lucky about that,” said Kreher. “The goal is to extend the reach of my company to outside of Richmond and start playing with the big dogs. “
