When your mind is going in a thousand directions, “Which major should I choose?,” why narrow your experience to just one? For Brigid Bartels (B.F.A. ’16), the indecision that came after completing AFO led her to a major that allowed her to explore a little bit of everything. That’s where Art Education came in.
“AFO was such an excellent crash course into so many new mediums that I had never tried before,” says Bartels. “I knew that as an Art Ed major, I would get a chance to take classes in every department as well as in the School of Education.”
Learning about education and the role of an arts educator has given Bartels the confidence to continue her love of learning after graduation. Another source of confidence? Studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa.
“Everyone should look into studying abroad,” says Bartels. “Traveling opens you up to new perspectives and opportunities. There are lots of scholarships and helpful people here who want to see you do it.”
“I love this community and I want to continue to grow along with it.”
After graduation, Bartels plans to stay in Richmond, where she’ll be teaching at the Visual Arts Center, Studio Two Three and King of Pops – where she’ll also be working on some murals and signage for their new shop in Scott’s Addition.
