Department of Kinetic Imaging adjunct Dr. Nathan Altice will present at Replaying Japan, a gaming conference, this year taking place in Kyoto with the theme, “The Globalization of Japanese Pop Culture and its Origins – Examining the Role of the Nintendo Entertainment System.” His trip was made possible by an adjunct faculty grant through the VCUarts Deans Office.
In addition to his international presentation, Altice is also celebrating the success of his first book, “I Am Error,” which hit number one on Amazon’s Computer and Video Game Design list. In the overview by publisher The MIT Press, “I Am Error” is in reference to the 1987 Nintendo Entertainment System [NES] videogame “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link,” where a character famously declared, “I am Error.” What many gamers thought was a bug turned out to be a translation error from Japanese to English. Altice’s book “explores the complex material histories of the [NES] (and its Japanese predecessor, the Family Computer), offering a detailed analysis of its programming and engineering, its expressive affordances and its cultural significance.”
For Richmond locals, a book release and author talk is scheduled for June 3, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at the Richmond Public Library.
Nathan Altice is adjunct faculty with Kinetic Imaging and has his doctorate from the Media, Art and Text (MATX) program at VCU.
