To the VCUarts community,

As the season of giving thanks approaches, our thoughts naturally turn to the people who support us through challenges, who inspire us to pursue and elevate us to a place of limitless possibility.

Just this month, I sat down with students from our departments of art history, fashion, graphic design, interior design, and craft/material studies. I’ve also had the chance to share my experiences in Canada with a student who traveled there to pursue a research project, with
financial support from the school.

These conversations reveal the passions of our students. They offer a lens into what drives their artistic pursuits, their creative endeavors and their vision for our community. And I appreciate the opportunity to listen to their stories, and to contribute to these exchanges. I’m grateful to be part of a community that shares its ideas and values openly, and I’m inspired to hear how our students, faculty, staff and alumni are committed to upholding VCUarts as a supportive, thoughtful and inclusive place.

I look forward to continued conversations about how we can work together to effect change and build an environment that reflects our shared ideals, and elevates one another as artists and as humans.

In just a few weeks, we’ll welcome a new voice into this community as Dominic Willsdon joins the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU as its new executive director and a faculty member in our art education department. Dominic’s exceptional curatorial experience, as well as his deep commitment to community engagement and education, will serve us well. I’m eager to see the leadership he brings to the ICA, and to have him as a partner of VCUarts. Please join me in welcoming Dominic to Richmond when he assumes his new role on December 1.

In closing, I’d like to extend my thanks to all of you for your continued support of VCUarts. I hope the coming year is your most daring, pioneering and electrifying one yet.

Warmly,

Shawn Brixey
