VCUarts Announces New Dean: Shawn Brixey

Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts announces the appointment of their new dean, Shawn Brixey, effective July 1, 2017. Brixey currently serves as the dean of the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Brixey comes to VCU with extensive experience in teaching, research and academic leadership.  He is admired internationally for his work in the confluence of art, science and technology. Prior to his current appointment, Brixey served as director of the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media and the Center for Advanced Research Technology in the Arts and Humanities at the University of Washington, where he also held the Floyd and Delores Jones Endowed Chair in the Arts. He began his academic career with fellowships at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Michigan and moved into teaching and leadership positions at the University of Kentucky and the University of California, Berkeley. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interactive Sculpture and Experimental Media from the Kansas City Art Institute and a Master of Science in Advanced Visual Studies from MIT.
