This fall, award-winning dancer and choreographer Nora Chipaumire returns to VCUarts as a performer in her visceral piece, “portrait of myself as my father.”
In this exploration of African masculinity, the Zimbabwe-born, Brooklyn-based choreographer Chipaumire is joined by the specters of her estranged father (performed by Senegalese dancer Pape Ibrahima Ndiaye, also known as Kaolack, and Jamaican-born dancer Shamar Watt). In a makeshift boxing ring, under the harsh glow of halogen work lights, the three trade jabs steeped in Chipaumire’s trademark synthesis of contemporary African movements.
Nora Chipaumire was invited to teach as part of the dance department’s 35th Anniversary year. Chair Gaynell Sherrod, Ed.D. says, “Chipaumire’s classes gave young performers a unique opportunity to study a fusion of South African traditional and contemporary dance forms.”
Recognized by professional dancers and choreographers as “a place where things are happening,” VCU Dance + Choreography offers a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere where students prepare for careers in dance.
Chipaumire will perform October 28 and 29 at the Dogtown Dance Theatre in Manchester. You can purchase tickets online for the Friday and Saturday night performances.
