VCUarts Community Celebrates Seipel Retirement With Custom Arcade

“Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we built an arcade and kept it at the Depot?”

“Yeah, that’d be pretty cool.”

“It should have Joe’s* face on it.”

And that’s pretty much how Joecade came to be.

Christopher “Dinkus” Deane, director of facilities, Cody Whitby, senior web developer, B.F.A. ’11, and Andrew Illnicki, director of academic programming, M.F.A. ’06, put their heads together to plan Joecade’s construction. Not only did they construct the physical unit that made up the arcade, they also built the computer that powered video game classics like Super Mario Bros and Pac-Man.

Some circuit boards, soldering irons, monitors, joysticks, wiring, two life-sized decals of Seipel and a wooden frame later, the arcade was born.
