A day in the life of a theatre major is no cakewalk. On top of classes, homework and exams, there are auditions, rehearsals and performances all year long.
“A lot of the roles that I’ve played while attending VCU have been strong, vivacious, grounded women and I feel so honored to have been able to portray them and bring my own sense of life to their stories,” says McMillian. “My favorite production of my career has to be The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe. Having the opportunity to play so many different characters that touch on so many different yet equally important topics that analyze the African-American experience really changed my life.”
But if TheatreVCU knows one thing, it’s how to celebrate and let loose after a tough semester. During McMillian’s sophomore year, the department had a super hero-themed celebration where they cheered and sent off the graduating class.
“That night we got a chance to celebrate [the seniors] and all of their accomplishments and enjoy each other’s liveliness,” says McMillian. “I will never forget being so in love with theatre people and the atmosphere we create when we are together.”
McMillian plans to eventually attend graduate school of performance. She also has her sights set on creating her own theatre company that will use theatrical techniques to help others cope with mental health issues.
“My time at VCU has not always been easy but I will never look back on it with regret. The lessons learned, opportunities had, and the wonderful people that I’ve had the honor of knowing are things that have changed my life forever. I have the strength and knowledge to face the world with a humbleness and fortitude that can only be gained in a department that challenges you but nurtures you with a fierce love and unyielding faith. I can face the world knowing that I will cover the ground that I stand on confidently and gratefully.” – Ciara McMillian
