What do you do when your parents want you to go into a technology field, but you want to pursue the arts? Find a field that combines the two and everyone wins! Coming into her freshman year at VCUarts, Laura Cox had in her mind that she wanted to get into graphic design, which became her top pick after AFO.
“By then, I thought of [graphic design] more as developing a specific skill set, rather than pigeonholing myself into one thing,” says Cox.
The same could be said about her aesthetic. The root of her process is focused around different methods of making and experimenting, a process that was not lost after the studio courses of Art Foundation.
“A lot of my work starts with me making with my hands. I will never start something on the computer and keep it on the screen for the entire process. It may or may not go through several translations from hand to computer and computer to hand. Holding something in my hands and manipulating it physically is very important to connecting with my work.” – Laura Cox
Cox is excited about all the opportunities in front of her post-graduation and hasn’t quite pinned down any one in particular.
“That’s what scares me about applying to one program, unable to jump ship and try new things. No matter where I end up, I always want to try new things.”
