Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts commemorates the Anderson Gallery, the school’s former exhibition space, with the release of “The Anderson Gallery: 45 Years of Art on the Edge.” The 232-page catalog chronicles the gallery’s exhibitions and artists, and includes essays by its most recent director Ashley Kistler, VCUarts Dean Joseph H. Seipel, and senior contributing editor at STYLE Weekly Edwin Slipek.

“The Anderson Gallery gave so many artists a platform to showcase their talents,” says Seipel. “This publication captures the history—and legacy—of the Anderson Gallery and gives those of us who knew and loved that space something to reflect on.” He adds, “I hope the next generation of artists will look back at the gallery as a source of inspiration.”

The publication is organized into five sections that each represent one decade of the gallery’s history. Each section begins with an essay by someone (or commemorates someone) who significantly contributed to the gallery during that period of time.

“This publication documents the evolution of not only the Anderson Gallery but also the School of the Arts and our cultural community,” says Kistler, who served nine years in the gallery. “The momentum created by the gallery will continue to evolve the arts landscape in Richmond.” Special Collections and Archives at the James Branch Cabell Library now houses the Anderson Gallery Collection. A number of pieces from that collection will be on display in the library. “It is our charge to continue the gallery’s legacy,” said John E. Ulmschneider, university librarian.

“Anderson Gallery: 45 Years of Art on the Edge,” designed by Scout Design, will be available for purchase for $35 later this month. For inquiries about the Anderson Gallery Collection, including faculty use for research or teaching, contact Yuki Hibben, assistant head and curator of books and art, Special Collections and Archives, ydhibben@vcu.edu or (804) 828-8837.
