American University teamed up with the University of Maryland to host a student summit at the annual Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference. The conference brings together undergraduate and graduate students with professional experts for a week-long educational conference. The student summit, held on April 3, focused on three tracks: food, consumption and the built environment; outreach; and climate justice.

Kia Jordan’s presentation, entitled “More Than a Buzzword: Overcoming the Green Phase,” focused on campus and community outreach and giving sustainability a grounded, substantial meaning, ensuring it is not a fad or trend, but a movement and an industry evolution. The presentation addressed company transparency and accountability, apparel sourcing, the role of consumers as sustainable ambassadors, the impact of millennials, and the use of green initiatives in the future.

Jordan, who is from Richmond, VA, completed a research intensive mentorship under Kimberly Guthrie, assistant chair and professor Fashion Design and Merchandising, while still in high school. Her undergraduate research on sustainable fashion has since evolved with Guthrie serving as her research and organization advisor and mentor. Jordan currently serves as the President of the ECOfashion Organziation. Jordan’s trip was sponsored by the Office of Sustainability.
