In 2013, the University is participating in the 150th anniversary of the Civil War by celebrating the “Year of Freedom,” which is 1863, the year of the Emancipation Proclamation. The committee is asking faculty, staff and students to make 12″ by 12″ panels for the VCU Freedom Quilt Project. The process is quite simple and artists from the School of the Arts are encouraged to add some flavor to the project.
These panels will be sewn together to create a quilt. Luckily, you do not need to know how to sew, although if you are a quilter, please feel free to quilt. The pattern is simple and allows for artwork or photos to be placed in the middle of the star. Click here for instructions on how to create your quilt square. We are hoping that each school will have enough panels sent in to make large size quilts that will be displayed throughout campus. We ask that the middle square display what freedom means to you. It can include artwork or an image. If you want to display a person or image in the middle, some examples are: someone who fought in the Civil War (Union or Confederate), a person who has meant a lot to your family, a person who has inspired you, or images relating the meaning of freedom. Panels are to be turned in by March 28th.
